What are the documents for the renewal of a residence permit?
Depending on the type of permit you hold, you will need a different set of documents. Let’s look at them together.

Documents for all residence permits (permessi di soggiorno)
Regardless of your residence permit type, you will certainly need some documents that are identical for everyone. These are:
- Revenue stamp (marca da bollo) of €16.00;
- Valid passport (and copies of the pages with personal data, expiration date, visas, and stamps);
- Current residence permit;
- 4 passport-size photos of the applicant, plus 4 photos of any minor children under 14 to be included in the residence permit (children must be present at the appointment);
- Tax code (codice fiscale), only if already held;
- Certification of current residence: – residence certificate, or a declaration of hospitality/property transfer stamped by the receiving office or with the shipping receipt to the Police Headquarters (Questura).
Please note: on the day of delivery and activation of the residence permit, parents and minor children over the age of 6 must be present.
Documents for renewal of individual residence permits
In addition to these fundamental documents, which are the same for everyone, you will need other documents based on the type of Italian residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) requested, as detailed in the following paragraphs.
1) Renewal for medical treatment
Foreign citizen who is pregnant or has given birth less than six months ago:
- Named medical certificate certifying the pregnancy and the expected date of delivery or, alternatively, the birth certificate extract of the child indicating maternity and paternity (in case of recognition);
- Postal payment slip for the smart card (€30.46) and for the required contribution (€40.00 for permits valid for up to 1 year and €50.00 for permits valid for more than 1 year or up to 2 years).
Spouse of a foreign citizen who is pregnant or has given birth less than six months ago:
- Named medical certificate certifying the pregnancy and the expected date of birth or, alternatively, the birth certificate extract of the child indicating maternity and paternity;
- Marriage certificate (if the marriage was celebrated abroad, the certificate must be translated and legalized by the Italian diplomatic or consular representation of the country of origin, or bear an Apostille if from a state party to the Hague Convention);
- Postal payment slip for the smart card (€30.46) and for the required contribution (€40.00 for permits valid for up to 1 year and €50.00 for permits valid for more than 1 year or up to 2 years).
2) Renewal for assistance of a minor
(Art. 31, paragraph 3, Legislative Decree no. 286/98- Testo Unico Immigrazione and subsequent amendments, electronic format)
- Extension of the authorization issued by the Juvenile Court, in the event that the first decree of the Juvenile Court does not authorize the foreign citizen to stay in Italy for a period exceeding two years (in this case, the residence permit is renewed for the remaining period);
- Postal payment slip for the smart card (€30.46) and for the required contribution (€40.00 for permits valid for up to 1 year and €50.00 for permits valid for more than 1 year or up to 2 years).

3) Renewal for political asylum
(Legislative Decree no. 251/2007 and subsequent amendments and Legislative Decree no. 25/2008 and subsequent amendments, Legislative Decree 142/2015 and subsequent amendments, paper format)
- Application for renewal of the residence permit for political asylum pending the decision of the competent Territorial Commission for the Recognition of International Protection, or documentation relating to any judicial proceedings initiated following the asylum seeker’s appeal against the Commission’s decision not to recognize international protection or against the judgment rejecting the appeal.
4) Renewal for subsidiary protection
(Legislative Decree no. 251/2007 and subsequent amendments and Legislative Decree no. 25/2008 and subsequent amendments, electronic format)
- Decree of the Territorial Commission for the recognition of international protection recognizing the status (only if coming from another province);
- Any judicial provision upholding the appeal presented against the Commission’s decision not to recognize international protection;
- Payment of the postal slip for the smart card (€30.46). The payment of the contribution for the issuance/renewal of the residence permit is not required (Art. 5, paragraph 2-ter, Legislative Decree no. 286/98 and subsequent amendments).
5) Renewal for stateless status
(Art. 11, paragraph 1, letter c) Presidential Decree no. 394/99 and subsequent amendments, paper format)
- Statelessness application submitted through the competent Prefecture, or
- Judicial appeal for the assessment of stateless status.
6) Renewal for family reasons for a spouse or relative within the 2nd degree of an Italian citizen
(Art. 19, paragraph 2, letter c) Legislative Decree no. 286/98 and subsequent amendments and Art. 28, paragraph 1, letter c) Presidential Decree no. 394/1999 and subsequent amendments)
- Copy of the self-declaration (dichiarazione sostitutiva di atto di notorietà) from the Italian spouse/relative up to the second degree, or their legal representative (if a minor), regarding the state of cohabitation with the applicant;
- Photocopy of an identity document of the Italian spouse/relative or their legal representative (if a minor);
- Self-declaration regarding financial maintenance by the Italian/EU spouse or relative, or their legal representative (if a minor);
- Documentation proving the means of support of the family member maintaining the applicant: latest tax return or CU (Certificazione Unica);
- Postal payment slip for the smart card (€30.46);
- Any certificates issued by the competent authority of the country of origin or provenance certifying the quality of family member and, if requested, of dependent family member (certificates from abroad must be translated and legalized by the Italian diplomatic or consular representation in the country of origin or bear an Apostille if from a state party to the Hague Convention).
